NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has had one of the best careers on the basketball court. However, the same cannot be said about his relationship status. He has had a few failed relationships and his longest relationship came with ex-wife Shaunie.

The two were married for quite some time before legally splitting in 2011. Interestingly enough, Shaq publicly talked about his feelings for his ex-wife in 2020.

Moreover, Shaq blamed himself for the shortcomings in his marriage. Talking on The Big Podcast with Shaq, the host asked whether Shaunie had anything to say regarding this. Interestingly enough, Shaq cleared that he did not have to hear from her for a very special reason.

However, he has faced hardships during the course of his long career. One of them is his relationships. Shaq split up with his long-time partner Shaunie, in 2009. Following that, he has not married anyone else and has expressed his feelings for Shaunie on various occasions.

Most famously, Shaq’s comment on Shaunie’s Instagram post made headlines all around. Shaq referred to Shaunie as “Mrs. Oneal”. Safe to say, this comment by Shaq sent the Internet into a frenzy.

Moreover, he recently talked about how he is responsible for the failed marriage. Shaquille O’Neal talked about his actions on the recent episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq. 

When asked about whether Shaunie reached him out regarding his words, Shaq summed up his relationship with her in two words. The words were, “she knows.” Shaq said, “She is happy now. I don’t have to hear from her because she knows.“

The two married in 2002 and briefly split up in 2007. Although the two were back, Shaunie filed for a divorce in 2009 which was finalized in 2011.

Interestingly enough, the Los Angeles Lakers legend blames himself for their failed marriage. Shaq said, “I was just being greedy. I had it all, and I don’t make excuses — I know I messed up.“

Since their separation, the two have traveled their own ways. While Shaq is still unmarried, Shaunie got engaged in late 2021.
