Every father hopes that their kids would achieve greater things in life than they did themselves. Michael Jordan wanted the same for his kids Jeffrey and Marcus. However, it’s a little difficult to emulate your parents, if they are named Michael Jordan. While Jordan did not push his kids to follow in his footsteps, he taught them to work hard to attain recognition and greatness. Jeffrey and Marcus aimed to become basketball stars like their father, but they soon realized they were meant to walk on a different path. Jeffrey Jordan co-founded the philanthropic foundation, Heir Jordan while Marcus started his own Jordan-inspired sneaker store in Chicago.

Marcus revealed the conversation he had with Michael Jordan about starting his sneaker store, Trophy Room, during an NBA TV Feature in 2019. Jordan’s younger son started Trophy Room in 2016, a store that provides a glimpse into Michael Jordan‘s legacy along with tons of cool sneakers.

Michael Jordan once reacted to his son’s idea
Marcus stated that the inspiration for his sneaker store came from the trophy room in their home, containing all the awards that Jordan had won in the NBA. The room was centrally located in Jordan’s house, providing an open view to anyone visiting them. MJ’s son reckoned that he wanted to create the vibe of the Jordan house in his store while celebrating his dad’s legacy by recreating timeless goods.

Marcus shared his dad’s reaction when he brought the idea of the Trophy Room to him. The former UCF guard said, “His initial reaction was, go get a job first.”

Jordan reminded his son that he needed to learn to run a store first before owning one. So, Marcus turned to his mentor and owner of the Whitaker Group, James Whitner. He developed a great business relationship with Whitner and learned a lot from his salon with rentals and boutiques. Moreover, Marcus evolved in terms of navigating retail and came back to his father with a solid business plan.

While Michael Jordan was tough on his kid regarding the business decision, he absolutely loved the opening of the trophy Room in 2016. Marcus and MJ opened the store together on 23rd May, as a tribute to their jersey numbers 5 and 23. Marcus felt a weight lift off his shoulder when he had a properly maintained store to show for in front of his father. And as it turns out, Jordan absolutely “loved it.”

Thus, Jordan was there to support his son during the greatest day of his life. Despite having doubts initially, MJ later on embraced the honoring gesture from Marcus.
