The Boston Celtics forced a game 7 as they beat the Philadelphia 76ers in the sixth game of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Jayson Tatum proved to be an asset as he added 19 points to the Celtics tally. As Tatum fights to book the Celtics a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals, his mother recently opened up about her experience raising him as a single parent.

Jayson Tatum‘s mother Brandy Cole-Barnes was only 19 when Tatum was born. She revealed that it was not at all easy to raise the basketball star as a teenage single mother.

In an interview given to NBC Boston, she revealed how the people around her reacted when she gave birth to her son at just 19 years of age. She said, “I had professors telling me I should just quit, I took him to the YMCA, and they didn’t ask, so I didn’t tell. He was bigger than all the other kids, and they were 5. And it was funny because even then, I knew he was gifted — I mean, he was 3 and a half, and he was still the best player on the team.”

According to Cole-Barnes, her professors at the University thought it would be best for her to quit college, but she decided to persevere instead. She realized that her son was relatively bigger than all the kids in his age group around him. Tatum was a natural talent, according to his mother.

In an interview given in November of last year, Brandy Cole-Barnes had revealed that she didn’t want to be just another statistic.

Brandy Cole-Barnes didn’t want to be just “another statistic”

Brandy Cole-Barnes had people doubting her when Jayson Tatum was born. People didn’t believe that she would be able to do anything in her career that is worthwhile. She said, “When I got pregnant, everybody wrote me off. People were just like, ‘You’re never going to amount to what you were supposed to. You’re just going to be another statistic.’ That fueled me.”

The words of everyone around her served as a motivation for her instead. As it seems, everything turned out to be good for Brandy Cole-Barnes. She completed multiple degrees and raised a son who went on to become a massively successful NBA star.
