There have been some great talents in the NBA. However, Dwyane Wade was a rare gem. Shining on the biggest stage at a young age, he put himself in an elite company. But when the time came to adjust, the three-time NBA champion was selfless. Letting LeBron James be the man, ‘Flash’ was willing to do anything to win. However, his biggest success story comes from beyond the court.
Apart from being one of the greatest players of all time, D-Wade is a great father. Notably, he fought for the custody of his then two kids, Zion and Zaire, for six years. After his retirement, the Miami Heat legend has become a true family man. Even when his transgender daughter opened up to him, Wade stood right by her.

During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Wade explained the time Zaya put out the truth. Moreover, he also spoke about his and Gabrielle Union’s parenting approach toward their 15-year-old daughter,

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, DeGeneres was in awe of Wade. She lauded him for sticking by Zaya’s side when she came out. He spoke about the time his daughter broke the news to him and Gabrielle Union. However, instead of panicking, Dwyane Wade assumed responsibility. As a father, Wade became the rock for his young daughter. And he and his wife immediately began reaching out for help.

Wade said: “When our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it is our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can. And that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”

“So once Zaya, our 12-year-old came home.. and said ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward, I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referred to as she and her, I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.”
Wade’s incredible approach toward Zaya has arguably helped her thrive in her truth. Despite all the outside criticism, the NBA Hall of Famer stuck by his daughter. And even to this day, Wade is helping out his 15-year-old. Notably, Dwyane Wade signed a petition for Zaya to legally change her name and gender.
