The NFL season officially came to an end on the 13th of February. The Kansas City Chiefs, led by their sensational quarterback Patrick Mahomes won the coveted title. With the whole world still celebrating the Chiefs’ win, former NBA champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar delved into a matter of grave concern. Addressing his large audience through his writings, Abdul-Jabbar asserted that this year’s Super Bowl was historic for a special reason. Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, the two starting quarterbacks, were both black.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar lauded the two players and their teams for this historic milestone. Moreover, he also addressed how celebrating such achievements is futile unless action is taken at the grassroots level. Additionally, Abdul-Jabbar also dragged former POTUS Barack Obama into the debate.

Super Bowl LVII marked the end of a rather interesting NFL season. The 2022-23 NFL season had multiple controversies including the infamous Damar Hamlin incident. However, there was more than one reason to rejoice.

Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, the two quarterbacks who faced off in the Super Bowl, happen to be black. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was ecstatic about this. Not very long ago, people undermined the Black community and asserted that they were somehow not capable enough.

However, that backward notion has changed. On his recent blog, Abdul-Jabbar addressed this while also talking about the time Barack Obama was elected to office. Although many claimed that systematic racism had reduced after Obama’s win, Abdul-Jabbar referenced some studies which claim otherwise.

Abdul-Jabbar wrote, “Remember how after Obama was elected president there were many loud proclamations how that was proof the U.S. was not systemically racist. The daily lives of Black people in health, education, jobs, and police interaction proved differently. So did dozens of studies. Hate crimes have been on the rise, with almost 70% of them being based on race or ethnic background. The levels are higher today than they’ve been since the 1990s.”

In the same article, Kareem also talked about the plight of Black coaches in the league. It is extremely difficult for a person of color to acquire a coaching role in the NFL and this angers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
