Ja Morant reminded people of his greatness in his first game back. Although the Morant has already served his 25-game punishment, Philadelphia 76ers legend Charles Barkley is still not happy with his actions. For someone who has the potential to become the face of the NBA, his actions put the league in jeopardy, and the Hall of Famer let his frustrations be heard on live television.

The thing I don’t understand first of all is if you got friends filming you with a gun, when you think one of them would say, ‘Hey, man. Maybe we shouldn’t be filming you with a gun’…He lost like 8 million dollars, that’s a lot of money,” said the 11x All-Star when talking about Morant’s suspension from the league.

Although Ja Morant is just 24 years old, Barkley is not happy with his decision-making. But more than that, the 1993 NBA MVP is worried about the people that the young guard has surrounding him. According to Barkley, when you know your friend is a superstar making a lot money, they should also be responsible and smart enough to not harm their reputation in any way.

So, Charles Barkley is not a fan of the people that Ja Morant has surrounding him, as they show no signs of having Morant’s best interests in mind. During his 25-game suspension, Morant lost 7.7 million dollars for the games he missed. However, the Memphis Grizzlies as a team have struggled way more.

Initially, Morant was suspended 8 games for showing his firearm at a nightclub. After getting the warnings from the NBA and having private conversations with Adam Silver, Morant acknowledged his mistakes. But within the next two months, the violation was repeated. Only this time, it was on one of his friend’s Instagram live streams. Although the person recording quickly tried to hide the camera, the damage had been done.

The Memphis Grizzlies really missed Ja Morant. They had a 6-19 record during Morant’s 25-game absence. It was evident that the team lacked any cohesion as the offense ran stale. But as soon as their star returned, the team seems to have turned a new leaf.

They won their first two games with Morant. In his first game of the season, Morant dropped 34 points including a ridiculous buzzer-beating layup. His Grizzlies even took down the Indiana Pacers, who were just in the in-season tournament finals, in his first home game after returning.

Although the playoff picture is still a question for the Grizzlies after getting off to an atrocious start, only time will tell if Morant can lead his team to the postseason. It would surely help but any qualms about the young guard to bed.

One take at a time

I did not follow the traditional route to become a journalist, but my love for basketball and writing has brought me here. Seeing LeBron James? Cleveland Cavaliers make the iconic comeback from a 1-3 deficit in 2016 changed everything for a young engineering aspirant within me. Rather than simply looking at the game, I love to analyze how each player contributes to a team using BPM (Box Plus Minus) and other advanced metrics.
