A resurfaced clip has brought Barkley’s filter into the open again after he provided his opinion on a less-conversed topic. Ironically, the NBA legend has an infamous, corrupt history with it.

Back in March of this year, the Philadelphia 76ers star gave an interview for ‘60 Minutes’. Held by sports journalist Jon Wertheim, the discussion covered many topics. From reflecting on his feud with Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan to sharing his excitement regarding his baby grandchild, Barkley talked in a candid manner throughout the conversation.

During the segment, the topic shifted towards the state of college basketball. When Wertheim asked Barkley’s opinion on the same, the former made it clear that he thinks “it’s a travesty and a disgrace.”

“I’m so mad now how we can mess up something that’s so beautiful,” said Barkley on the topic at hand. When asked about how people messed up college basketball, Barkley replied, “We can’t pay all these players.” The interviewer interpreted the comments as a shade on the current system, where players are brought at the highest bid by different schools.

Barkley claims that within the next half-decade, those schools that have the resources to accumulate the players will dominate against those schools that can’t afford the cream of the crop. It was a statement of intent, but weighed poorly on his dealings with his own collegiate basketball career.

Did Barkley take money from agents in college basketball?

The interview wasn’t the first time that Charles Barkley brought this particular issue to the limelight.

During another interview that took place 7 years ago, Sir Charles confessed that he had accepted $20,000 from agents during his time at Auburn University. The money helped him to get through college and support his family at the same time.

This led to Barkley forming a biased opinion against the NCAA, which reportedly didn’t provide a similar type of support to other players.

“The system is unfair,” said Barkley. He highlighted his opinion that the process of accepting money from boosters and agents should be a legal one. This would prevent the college players from working extra jobs and adding more to their coursework just so that they could make ends meet.
