Smith recently dropped his top 5 list of the most influential players in NBA history, which again sparked a discussion. But unlike the other controversial lists, Smith’s top 5 list is less likely to cause an argument among fans.

As fans might expect, the list is made up of some familiar and usual names such as Michael Jordan and Lebron James. But what’s interesting about the list is Smith gave the first spot to Jordan instead of Magic Johnson for one interesting reason. Have you seen the list yet? Stephen A. Smith crowns Michael Jordan with the first position

It is quite a tough judgment to make about who is the greatest player of all time or GOAT. But the 55-year-old made his list pristine and clear with his judgment. His list featured Bill Russell, Stephen Curry and LeBron James at numbers 5, 4 and 3 respectively.

While Johnson is at number 2, his Airness, Michael Jordan rests at number 1. On First Take, Smith explained his choices to the public. He revealed the reason behind his decision to place Jordan instead of Johnson at the top.

Explaining his top pick, Smith said, We’re talking about the man primarily responsible for the sport going global. If it not were not for Michael Jeffrey Jordan the sport, it’s global impact, iconic global brand it is.

Without a name it could not have happened, without this (Magic Johnson), but this couldn’t take it to this level, you need him (Jordan) to take it to that level that is what Michael Jordan did.”

While Smith is true about his opinion, the Los Angeles Lakers legend’s contribution to the NBA is also quite notable.

Undeniably, Jordan’s business deals such as Nike and Gatorade were instrumental in turning the sport into a global brand. But Johnson was able to reignite the public’s interest in the game. 

While Johnson helped change the various negative perceptions people had about the game, Jordan opened new doors for other players to gain more popularity. And certainly, each and every NBA player has contributed to the game of basketball in their own unique fashion.
