NBA players contend for games, statistics, and accolades. However, their legacy is far greater than just the numbers. They can lead, inspire, and elevate an entire generation. That is the hallowed ground that Kobe Bryant finds himself in. And Nike is taking full advantage of that. With the re-launch already a massive success, the market leaders have gone above and beyond to make the releases special. However, their marketing and promotion for That’s Mamba might be some of their best work. But it seems they might have saved their best for last.

Vanessa Bryant would take to Instagram to share the latest promotion for the motto. This time, it encompasses the key pillars that made Bryant the Mamba. Whether it was the heartfelt message from Mrs. Bryant “A legacy not left up to fate, but meticulously crafted through dedication and hard work
That’s Mamba“, or the details in the video itself, the entire production was exquisite.

5 adjectives masquerading as a noun. Each would come to define the player and the man that Kobe Bryant was. Selecting a myriad of some of his best highlights, Nike left no stone unturned. Firstly, Passion. “Devoting yourself to a goal through relentless commitment and dedication.”

Next, Obsession. “The ability to concentrate, stay disciplined, and build skills.” After that, Fearless. “The courage to try new things, fail, and try again.” With the music swelling, the final 2 words would come into focus. First, Resilience. “Believing in yourself and having a positive outlook, no matter how big of a challenge you face.” As the video would showcase images of an injured Kobe continuing to stay on the hardwood, you knew what the next pillar was.

To conclude, Relentless. “Being true to yourself and never budging on your non-negotiables.” For each word, the accompanying text read the same phrase, “noun (Koh-bee).” As the music built to its crescendo, chants of that same figure would fill in.

The entire tribute had the fans in a grip. While the Christmas Day tribute had them queasy, this was far more emotionally nerve-wracking. Immediately, they would take to the comments to air out their own emotions on the matter.

Kobe Bryant tribute turns fans teary-eyed

On Nike’s official page, fans came out in droves out of love and respect for the 5x NBA Champion. Of course, the marketing has been a phenomenal success in terms of demand and value. One fan made that abundantly clear, hoping, “All I want for Christmas are a pair of Kobes”

But, for most fans, the video was an emotional and gut-wrenching hit of nostalgia for the incredible feeling Bean gave you. On the festive night of Christmas, Nike had perfect timing. “Y’all making me tear up on Christmas”

Another would go far more simple. “We miss you Mamba” Amen, my friend. Amen. That sentiment was a common one with multiple variations of “I miss him” and “I miss Mamba” making the rounds.

One take at a time

My earliest memories of a connection to basketball was through its popularity in my school. Eventually, that gave way to a genuine passion for the sport and the rest, is history. Whether it be gameplay, the tactics, the narratives, or the sheer art on display, the game speaks to me in a way few other things can.
