Throughout his career, Kobe Bryant was known for his extraordinary talent, constant drive, and pursuit of excellence. But even the Black Mamba had limits. The Los Angeles Lakers‘ hopes of winning a title were dashed in 2013 when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg. Nevertheless, despite the setback, an unexpected bright spot appeared: Kobe and Pau Gasol’s relationship became closer. Fans of the Lakers will always remember the moment the injury happened—during their match against the Houston Rockets. Kobe’s twisted body and painful cry shocked the basketball community. An Achilles tear, which is known to destroy even the best and most promising careers, was the worst-case scenario that the diagnostic verified.

At first, Kobe felt hopeless and frustrated. Due to the injury, he had to miss the remainder of the season and his future was called into question. But it was at this fragile moment that Pau Gasol rose to the occasion. Recently in an interview on the Late Show, Pau Gasol got emotional while he was speaking about his relationship with Bryant.

“When everything goes well, you don’t feel like there’s a need, like, everybody has their own circle… you don’t feel a need to be present off the court… but when something bad happens, when something’s wrong, you know, you feel like, hey, I’m here for you in any way I can,” Pau said.

Gasol, who has been Kobe’s friend and teammate since 2008, developed into an essential source of help. He became Kobe’s workout partner, accompanied him to rehabilitation, and offered emotional encouragement. To adjust to Kobe’s absence, Gasol even modified his style of play and increased his offensive responsibility. Kobe was not the same player on the court when he finally made a comeback in 2014. But his desire to win and mental toughness had doubled. He referred to Gasol as his “brother” and acknowledged that he had played a major part in his return. Beyond the game of basketball, Kobe and Pau had a special friendship.
