Giannis Antetokounmpo has a tempting supermax extension that is about to cross his path. Everybody’s confused over whether he will take it or drop it. Along with the Bucks, a lot of other teams have a lot riding on Giannis’ answer.

If the Greek Freak accepts the offer, his fate will be locked with the Bucks for a long time. In case he drops it, the contract with the Bucks will end in 2021. This will open ways for the teams with enough cap to offer Giannis a trade. So what should the 2-time MVP choose? An NBA champion has shared his views on this.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the choice that’ll define him

Recently, a former NBA Champion from the Boston Celtics, Paul Pierce, was part of an interview where he discussed Giannis’ future. He noted the fact that the DPOY 2020 will be offered a $221.6 million contract. Pierce said:

“Listen, the Supermax is 200 and what! Man, without question you play all your life to get to this point, so you can secure that type of money for generations of your family, yes you do it at first. I know he’s competitive, he wants to win a championship, but a championship is not guaranteed. You can sign here for less for a chance to win a championship and never win. But this guaranteed contract on your face, 221 million dollars, that’s guarantee right there, you got to take that.”

Pierce made it clear that Giannis must consider taking that offer because no other team will be able to come close to matching that kind of money. He further added, “We got a generational talent. They’re gonna try to get better. And like I said, 220, woo… Where can he really go and guarantee a championship.”

What are the pros and cons of leaving the Bucks’ contract?

The Greek Freak will be 26-years-old when the next season begins. If he takes this offer, his financial security will be guaranteed until he turns 31. In the NBA, there is always a chance of either getting injured, losing one’s form, or the team ending up failing a star player. In such cases, a supermax will act as a cushion for Giannis who comes from a humble background.

Having said that, Giannis can drop the contract and give the Bucks one more year to surround himself with talents like Chris Paul. This can either make him finally win his first championship or open his chances to join a better team.

Both the options look viable and it all comes down to Giannis. What do you think he will choose?
