After signing with the Giants this offseason, Russell Wilson was Brian Daboll’s locked-in starter from the second he set foot on the roster. But now, even Daboll has finally hit his limit, thanks to Sunday night’s 22–9 flop against Kansas City. After watching the offense sleepwalk through four quarters, along with multiple poor throws and interceptions, the Giants have officially handed the keys to rookie Jaxson Dart, naming him QB1 for Week 4 and beyond. But an insider believes that Daboll should’ve done it long ago.

Reporter Connor Hughes believes that Jaxson Dart would’ve won the QB1 job in camp if Wilson wasn’t locked in as the starter since day one. “I genuinely believe that if the Giants had an open QB competition, if this wasn’t something that was guaranteed to Russell Wilson…..there are some who believe that Jaxson Dart would’ve won it outright. If Dart was given an opportunity to win the starting job, Dart would’ve won it out,” he said.

And this is something every Giants fan knows. Deep down, at least. Russell Wilson was already coming off a dip, but the first three games squandered away the tiniest of hopes the fans had. And they were left wondering just how long it would be till Dart would take on the reins. Three games, apparently!

The fans were already sending Brian Daboll a clear message when they chanted Dart’s name after the first half ended on Sunday. And it was clear why. The offense really struggled against the Chiefs, managing just 281 total yards. Wilson went 18-of-32 for 160 yards, didn’t find the end zone, threw two picks, and finished with a rough 43.8 passer rating.

The pattern started in week 1 itself. Week 1 against Washington? Not great. He went 17-of-37 for 168 yards, no touchdowns, no picks, and a 59.3 rating, basically steering a rudderless Giants offense to just 231 total yards. Vs Dallas? 450 passing yards in a 40-37 loss.

Dart, on the other hand, has been impressive ever since camp. In just his first two preseason outings, he went 26-for-35 for 291 yards, threw two touchdowns, and even added a rushing score. His snatching away the QB1 job was pretty much written in stone; it was just a matter of how soon Brian Daboll would crack.

Hughes also claimed that having Wilson and Dart together wasn’t a bad idea. No one expected Dart to grow as much as he has in just a few months. “Most people shared the opinion of Dart, that he was incredibly green….It wasn’t until he got in the Giants building that he started picking up stuff so quickly….Especially when the preseason started, you could tell the guy was ready,” he added.

The pace at which Dart picked up things is why Daboll named him the starter going forward.

Jaxson Dart will be the starting QB vs the Chargers

Yes, Brian Daboll announced that Dart would be the QB1 for the Chargers game next week, and beyond. And let’s be honest, this is Brian Daboll’s final card left to play. Daboll is a head coach who has seen his team go 11-33-1 since the 2022 season. A season that started 7-2, by the way.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t improved. They’re 3-17 since the start of last season, and it’s a wonder how Daboll still has the HC job. He’s obviously on a short leash. So, he doesn’t want to play with fire by putting it all on a falling Russell Wilson card. Jaxson Dart turning this offense around is the only thing that could save this season for the Giants.

And it was clear that Daboll was getting more and more non-committal towards Wilson after every game. “You guys have asked me about players after games. I’m not going to answer that,” he said on Sunday. He gave Wilson as much time as he could. Maybe even more than he should’ve.

But he might have to be a little more patient with Dart. You can’t expect a rookie to start firing on all cylinders in his first NFL game. Preseason showed that he has all the ability in the world; it just needs to be polished carefully and patiently. It cannot possibly be worse than the first three weeks, where the team struggled to rack up over 300 yards.
