The 2024 NFL season seems to be heating up for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After all, just earlier this year, the team signed QB Russell Wilson and a month later got Justin Fields in a trade from the Bears. Although there have been doubts about who would be starting for Pittsburgh, things were taken up a notch when the 25-year-old admitted to being locked in a competition with the former Broncos athlete for the spot. Now, a sportswriter for The Athletic has shared his thoughts on the situation.

According to reports from The Athletic’s senior Steelers writer, Mark Kaboly, it was claimed that Wilson would “undoubtedly” be the team’s starting quarterback. He even added that “it doesn’t matter how well Fields plays in the spring or summer.” The reporter elaborated on what he meant by saying that Pittsburgh had chosen the 35-year-old and they “will see it through.”

Apart from being the Steelers’ first choice, Kaboly claimed that Wilson was what Pittsburgh and “their young offense” needed right now. After all, analysts considered the 35-year-old a Hall of Fame quarterback who could be a great and consistent leader for the new recruits. In fact, the sportswriter even agreed that “Fields is the future, but Wilson is the present.”

The author might know what he wants to see on the field this season. However, just days ago, news erupted that Wilson’s starting position could be in danger. With rumors like that flowing out, there is still a chance that Fields could change the team’s mind. In fact, that is what the athlete plans on doing.

Justin Fields reveals he has an eye on the Steelers’ starting position

Most Steelers fans might want to see Russell Wilson take on the role of QB1. However, the father of four is not the only athlete “competing” for the position. With the team having brought in Justin Fields as a trade from the Bears just a month after signing the 35-year-old, a rivalry seemed to be born. Now, as the 25-year-old headed into training on Tuesday, the quarterback finally addressed the media for the first time since the trade.

During media conference, Fields admitted to the reporters that he was “definitely competing” with Wilson. But he claimed that it was a mutual competition between the two. With both athletes out on the field ahead of the upcoming season, they seem to have begun a little friendly competition. However, the young star revealed that he had no plans of “just sitting all year.”

It might take a lot of practice sessions and maybe even an unfortunate injury for Fields to become the top choice. However, with Wilson and him working a little harder every day, the 25-year-old could get his day in the sun a little sooner than expected. After all, the trade had given the younger quarterback just the opportunity he needed to prove he had what it takes to be a leading athlete.
