The Kansas City Chiefs have a bittersweet relationship with their wide receiver, Kadarius Toney. He hasn’t played in a single game since the Week 15 matchup against the New England Patriots. Leave the Super Bowl; by the nature of things, it would be a miracle if the Chiefs keep him around in the next season.

The good news is that Toney was recently removed from the injury reports, but whether he will play in Super Bowl LVIII is still a mystery. Also, Toney went on IG and caused some stir due to how things were going with him and the team. There are a couple of reasons why the Chiefs might not put him on the roster on the day of the Super Bowl. This might be due to him being out of form and a couple of disciplinary issues.

Will the Chiefs put Kadarius Toney at the forefront again?

By the look of things, this is highly unlikely. The last draw might have come in the game against the New England Patriots when the receiver dropped a pass from Patrick Mahomes and turned the ball over to Jahlani Tavai. The Chiefs won that game but lost their trust in Toney for the foreseeable future. Toney’s situation looks like a cause-and-effect loop.

He doesn’t get targeted enough, so he doesn’t have the numbers. Or is it the other way around? For a team of the Chiefs’ caliber, a confident expectation comes from a player like Toney. He had 27 receptions over 169 yards and a single touchdown in 13 games of the 2023 regular season.

His teammate Rashee Rice leads the franchise in yards and receptions. Rice has 79 receptions this year, over 938 yards, and 7 touchdowns. He doesn’t have a problem getting targeted because he doesn’t drop the ball as often as Toney, nor has he turned it over to other teams that much.

One of the top receivers, Tyreek Hill, an ex-Chief, has 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 TDs! So, what is it? Is Toney not credible enough, or do the Chiefs not trust him anymore?

The rift between the Chiefs and Toney

We have seen plenty of times when Patrick Mahomes handed the ball over to Toney, and the results were not fruitful. The QB and their head coach kept their cool and didn’t lose faith in him. However, similar patterns kept repeating throughout the upcoming games.

The latest and most controversial example was him getting called out for being past the line of scrimmage in the Bills game. Mahomes’ touchdown pass was ruled out because Toney was offside.

Another thing to note was how Toney went off on the Chiefs and was frustrated because he was benched for so long. “Man that s*** cap. I’m not hurt. Not of that s***. Save that s***. It go from hip to ankle to this to that. I’m in a body cast right now at this point,” Toney said on Instagram Live.
