It seems the AFC Title Game still hasn’t settled anything! The debate whether Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson is the greater quarterback still rages on. Despite Mahomes leading his team to a 17-10 victory over Jackson’s squad and clinching the Super Bowl MVP title, the debate remains as fiery as ever. Especially considering Jackson winning the NFL MVP title.

On the debut episode of the 25/10 Show, two former Super Bowl champions, DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy, weighed in on this ongoing QB conundrum. They firmly placed Mahomes above Jackson. While Jackson’s achievements are noteworthy, his performance statistics are only marginally better than those of Justin Fields from the Bears.

The duo were actually discussing Justin Fields. And why he shouldn’t be just a backup QB for the Steelers. However, McCoy said that Fields is just not good enough. Clearly agitated, DeSean brought up points to prove why he was good. “Go look at the MVP from last year. Go look at Lamar Jackson’s stats. Pull them up, okay? Justin Fields is not far off. Justin Fields is 26, nine interceptions, and he’s 10.”

But McCoy countered that his stats were so good, and he won the MVP just because of his team. And that it wasn’t fair to compare Fields according to Lamar’s yardstick. According to DeSean, Jackson isn’t even that great a QB despite winning two NFL MVP titles. He said, “You can’t compare him to a Patrick Mahomes, you can’t compare him to a Tom Brady”.

But what do experts say about the two QBs?

How do Lamar Jackson and Mahomes compare as QBs?

Avery is a top-notch QB coach and has guided the likes of Deshaun Watson, Justin Fields, C.J. Stroud, and Jalen Hurts. He has been tracking the progress of Mahomes and Jackson. The QB coach compared Mahomes’ precision with the football to a skilled pitcher who has mastered three distinct types of throws. “Mahomes throws the ball as well as you can throw the ball in three different ways,” Avery remarked. Mahomes’ versatility shines in delivering straight, touch, and high-trajectory passes with remarkable accuracy.

On the other hand, Jackson brings a different set of extraordinary skills to the table. His evolution as a pocket passer has significantly altered defensive strategies against him. Avery pointed out, “There was a point in time where people thought, ‘OK, let’s just make him throw.’ But that’s not the way it is now.” Jackson’s ability to dominate from the pocket while retaining his unmatched athleticism makes him a formidable challenge for any defense.

Avery drew parallels between Jackson and other legendary dual-threat QBs like Michael Vick and Cam Newton. According to Avery, Jackson’s athleticism, combined with his improved pocket passing, sets him apart. “He just throws the ball so well from the pocket. Like, I don’t think people understand how good of a job he has done with that part of his game,” Avery observed. While Mahomes may not outpace Jackson in a footrace, his agility and ability to create space are second to none.
