After all the firing rumors, Russell Wilson has now finally been released from the Denver Broncos. As Wilson’s era comes to an end in Denver, this also marks his arrival in the open market for the first time in his NFL career. Things went off the rail from the beginning in Denver – from trade capping a tension-filled Seahawks season to Wilson’s belief in the team’s imperfect offensive scheme. This move also leaves the Broncos with an NFL-record $85 million dead cap hit. But what’s next for Wilson?

There are a few quarterback-needy teams that might find the Super Bowl winner’s availability attractive. However, according to NFL analyst, Colin Cowherd, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be a happy landing for the now-released quarterback.

In a recent episode of The Colin Cowherd Podcast, the 60-year-old host reacted to the Broncos’ recent decision on Russell Wilson. According to Cowherd, Sean Payton wants to win the games, while Wilson, on the other hand, wants to find a perfect landing spot for him. So, they aren’t “in the blame game, they’re in the Turn the Page game.”

Considering this, the analyst revealed that he thinks “Pittsburgh’s perfect. You cannot be in a division with Joe Burrow twice a year, Kevin Stefansky and Deshaun Watson twice a year, and Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert twice a year….Steelers near the bottom of the NFL, I think he roll the dice, you go with Russell Wilson, his maturity and devotion and commitment is what the Steelers need offensively.

He continued expressing that the Steelers have promising young receivers, although they are considered a bit inexperienced and immature. Despite having an average offensive line, Cowherd believes that Wilson’s mobility can compensate for it. He mentioned the importance of having a QB in the AFC to succeed and thinks Wilson will fit well with the culture and personnel in Pittsburgh.

Although Russell Wilson earlier wished to stay with the Broncos, the team has now released leading to the largest dead cap hits in history. The now-free agent is available for teams like Raiders, Steelers, Patriots, and Bears. When arguably “forced to leave,” Wilson shared his thoughts on social media with a lengthy note for team Broncos.

He wrote on X, “Thank You Broncos Country….Over these last two years, you have welcomed my family and me with open arms and have embraced us as members of the Denver community. This city will always hold a special place in my heart…..Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. God’s got me. I am excited for what’s next.

So, given his present status, it’s likely that Wilson might land up to any team, and “take the league minimum for 2024, since Denver owes him $39 million.” Therefore, as per a report by SI, the Steelers are likely to sign Wilson for a one-year deal, if he wishes to join in for a small contract. Well, that’s what former NFL player Chad Johnson also feels as the Steelers’ news continues to gain momentum.

The franchise will get the chance to negotiate with the quarterback from March 11, during the legal tampering period (54 hours- March 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET- March 13 at 4 p.m. ET) for NFL free agency 2024.
