It looks like it is the end of the Russell Wilson era at the Denver Broncos. The QB was brought to the city of Denver from the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 after a blockbuster trade. With him, Wilson brought the hope of winning championships. But two years later he is being benched. With suggestions going around, that Wilson will be cut, exactly how profitable was this 2-year stint for the QB?

The Broncos traded their 4 picks in the NFL 2022 and 2023 draft, along with 3 players, to acquire Wilson in a mammoth $245 million deal for 5 years. But as things look, this deal will not run its course. Certainly, Wilson would have wanted to win trophies here, but his time hasn’t all been bad, with his swollen bank account.

For the home game against the Los Angeles Chargers, HC Sean Payton announced that Wilson will be on the bench. This move looks to ensure that Wilson remains injury-free. Because if he gets injured, that will be a financial strain on the Broncos. An additional financial strain of $37 million on top of the existing $160 million.

According to their contract, if Wilson returns injured by March 2024, the additional $37 million clause would get triggered. But that is miniscule in comparison to what the Broncos have already paid Wilson and will have to pay him in the future.

The Broncos have already paid the Super Bowl winner almost $40 million and are slated to pay him $85 million more in guarantees over the next two years. They will have some respite as the payments after that dwindle, but continue till 2028. Amidst this, does Wilson deserve to be shown the door?

9X Pro Bowler is certainly not at the peak of his powers but has contributed enough to the Denver squad. In comparison to Patrick Mahomes’ season, Russell Wilson stands out as the better QB. Both have 26 TDs, below their expected levels.

However, Wilson has been better at protecting the ball, compared to Mahomes. Wilson has only 8 interceptions in the season thus far, but Mahomes has 14 interceptions. Wilson has also registered 3 rushing TDs compared to Mahomes’ zero.
