The NFL has attracted a lot of attention lately, a significant portion being controversies. Especially after last Sunday’s Chiefs game and Patrick Mahomes’ outburst with the decision that ruled out a last-minute touchdown and eventually cost them the game against the Bills. Commissioner Roger Goodell, however, found the irony when reporters asked him about the incident.

Amid the controversy, Goodell also shared one crucial update regarding the future of the league. Talking to the December League meeting in Irving, Texas, he also pointed out the recent efforts the NFL has been taking to update its profile. One of them was the much-anticipated women-involvement in its governing body. And Goodell branded the idea as ‘fantastic’, insisting that the time was near.

Goodell claimed that there had been huge women’s involvement in the league’s accelerator program, which was dedicated to enhancing an individual’s coaching business proficiency. “I think it’d be fantastic. We had several women that participated in the Accelerator program. We have a lot of people, and we have one teammate in our office who I think certainly could be a general manager.” He even mentioned one particular member in the office who was eligible enough to fulfill the role.

He then revealed the most important update of all, the timeline of it happening a reality. “I believe that that day will come, and it will come soon.” Goodell further picked the talent meeting aspect as a prominent motivation behind women involvement. “I think the No. 1 thing, it goes back to talent meeting opportunity. The talent is there,” he also assured.

But before coming to the organisational structure, the league commissioner had a few words about officiating, particularly the Patrick Mahomes incident.

Roger Goodell finds the irony in officiating issue

Talking to the media in the meeting, Goodell first pointed out how he was being questioned despite people agreeing with the decision. “I find it a little ironic when you say attention on officiating when I think almost everybody, to my knowledge, is acknowledging that the officials were absolutely correct,” he said.

He also questioned why certain individuals were doubting on their decision in the first place. “That’s their job to call when there’s a foul. There was no question about that foul. It was absolutely the right call”, Goodell wanted the discussion to end for once and for all.

Although he agreed that the officials were human after all and were not perfect. His only takeaway was that the decision to rule out the touchdown was always a fair one. Something Mahomes himself later agreed to.
