The Steelers season? It was like getting all the right ingredients for a perfect Thanksgiving dinner, only to burn the turkey right before the big meal. Russell Wilson and crew started the season on a high note with a rightful contender for the number 1 seed, and now they’re out of the league with five straight losses. And the final one came against their bitter rival, the Ravens. Talk about horror and disaster at the same time. With that loss, the QB’s contract came to an end with the team.
Speaking of the QB, Wilson really had a season to remember, huh? First, it was that calf injury, and just when he gets back on the field, bam—the whole Wilson vs Fields drama kicks off. Wild, right? However, just when you thought that Wilson was done with the Steelers, the QB came up with a solid message. “Love my teammates! Best days are ahead,” he said on ‘X’. Looks like the QB is all set to stay with the Steel City.

Well, we’re yet to get a confirmation of what Wilson thinks about the QB frustration in the Steelers’ locker room throughout the season. After all, Justin Fields is his teammate as well. But let’s cut to the chase. Wilson has made his mood to return to the Steelers for the next season. “I’ve got so much more in me, man. My goal is to be with the Pittsburgh Steelers a long time and hopefully finish my career there,” the QB stated during the Pat McAfee show.
The reason? Well, the Steelers signed Wilson on a one-year contract, and as it appears, the Super Bowl champion is quite impressed with the head coach, Mike Tomlin. “Pittsburgh was a special place for me and I love it there..Mike Tomlin motivates us and being around him was a gift…There’s so much leadership in that locker room and that’s what makes it special,” Wilson continued.
The QB is back to square one, with no confirmation of any contract extension in the time being. Moreover, the Pittsburgh team seems to shift their interest towards Fields, who’s also a free agent coming this off-season. All in all, the quarterback drama for the Steelers’ is a complete loop, and Wilson and Fields just happen to be stuck in it after the playoff loss.
Mike Tomlin has no words after wild-card round loss
Mike Tomlin’s journey with the Steelers? 18 years as head coach, just one Super Bowl title, and a painful eight-year playoff drought. After Wilson and Fields joined the squad, you’d think this might be the year he flips the script. But nah, the Ravens had other ideas, sending them packing with a brutal beatdown. So, what does a setback like that do to a head coach? Well, in Tomlin’s case, it looks like he was left speechless, not even sure how to explain what just went down.

During the latest episode of Hard Knocks, Tomlin talked about the wild-card loss. “I’m not going to pretend to be eloquent and have words for what we’re doing right now,” he said. “I don’t. I never ever prepare for failure, to be quite honest with you. It’s a waste of time. I know it hurts. It hurts for me. I assume it hurts for you. When I fail, I expect it to hurt. I’m ok with that component of it, but it can’t hurt too long because then it jeopardizes what lies ahead.”

Speaking of what lies ahead, there were rumors that this season could be his last with the Steelers, even before the wild-card round. And guess what? That bitter loss added fuel to the fire, and fans started calling to fire him. However, the head coach had signed a three-year contract extension with the Steelers in 2024 to remain till 2027. And he just confirmed his future with the Steelers on the latest episode of Hard Knocks.

“I love what I do. I’m a competitor. That’s who I am,” Tomlin continued. “I’m comfortable with that. As painful as this failure is, I love this game. I love this business at this level. I do. I absolutely love it, even when it’s miserable. In terms of this journey coming to a screeching halt, I don’t have the words. I don’t.” That said, it looks like both Russell Wilson and Mike Tomlin want to retire with the Steelers. But the question is, are they gonna retire with a Super Bowl? Guess we’ve to wait a bit longer for that.
