The City of Champions gets a new team

On Saturday, the Riverhounds announced that Pittsburgh would be getting a new women’s soccer team. While no name for the team had been revealed yet, interested fans were promised that it would be announced “in the coming months.” With the team set to begin playing in the USL W in 2025, the players will have some time to work together and figure out their strategies.

After the announcement, the President of the Riverhounds, Jeff Garner stated, “As we experience the remarkable growth of women’s soccer globally, it’s imperative that we not only acknowledge but actively champion the immense talent and passion that exists within our own communities.”

He also added that “by establishing a pathway for girls in our region to pursue the highest levels of soccer, particularly those emerging from our esteemed Riverhounds Development Academy, we are not just creating opportunities, we are fulfilling dreams.” While a women’s soccer team in the USL might be a huge win for the ladies in sports, they still have a long way to go before they get to the NWSL stage.

Russell Wilson and Ciara’s love for everything Pittsburgh

Until last month, Russell Wilson had been a part of the Denver Broncos. However, after a tiff with the team’s coach, Sean Payton, he wound up parting ways with the team. Shortly after that, the 31-year-old was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and he dove right in. Apart from just joining the team, he and his wife, Ciara, decided to take on the culture and become one with the people of the City of Champions.

Although the quarterback had only signed a one-year contract with the team, he has seemingly decided to go all in. With the 31-year-old and his wife having just shifted to Pittsburgh, they even took it upon themselves to give back to the community by supporting other Pittsburgh-based teams like the Penguins, the Pirates, and more.

In fact, the quarterback even took things a step further and celebrated the city’ biggest day, 412 Day in the most surprising way. While the holiday might not be known to many people, it has been a big deal for the people of Pittsburgh for years. It pays tribute to the city’s area code. With Wilson participating in the city’s traditions, he may have proved that the Steelers would be the team that he could settle in!
