NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson significantly expanded his empire by acquiring a stake in the Washington Commanders. Johnson expressed the magnitude of this venture. He said it’s “the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life” during an exclusive interview with NBC’s Craig Melvin on the “TODAY” show. In a unanimous decision, NFL owners granted approval on Thursday for the sale of the Commanders.

It forwards to a consortium led by billionaire Josh Harris, which notably includes the legendary five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson. This high-profile group is set to assume ownership from the embattled Daniel Snyder. They will be marking a historic transaction valued at a record-breaking $6.05 billion. Johnson raised a lot of eyebrows after choosing a team that was not from his hometown.

Magic Johnson chose Commanders over the Rams and Chargers

Magic Johnson, aged 63, extended his ownership prowess. He added the Commanders to an illustrious list that includes the Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, and Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC. Notably, his Magic Johnson Enterprises once held ownership of over 100 Starbucks, a venture that reaped a substantial $100 million upon sale. Even though the Commanders are not from his hometown as Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, he still went ahead with the team.

In a recent interview, Johnson’s emotions surfaced, and tears were evident as he reflected on his business triumphs. He articulated the significance of breaking barriers and opening doors as a proud Black man. Johnson also expressed gratitude for the opportunities bestowed upon him. Johnson’s mission extends beyond personal success, aiming to serve as an inspiration for the African-American community.
