The Super Bowl is undoubtedly the country’s most highly anticipated sporting event. While the game might draw most of the crowd, the halftime show is what numerous others chime in for. The star-studded lineup and the excitement in the background make it nothing short of a festival. But to fans’ disappointment, the 2024 Super Bowl falls short of expectations.

To lead the excitement this year, eight-time Grammy-winning singer Usher took the stage for halftime. But as the performance kicked off, including Alicia Keys in the routine, the internet stirred with disappointment taking over the audience.

Over the years, Super Bowl halftime has grown to welcome dream lineups and not just in the halftime. Through opening and during the mini breaks, the artists have announced their presence in offering heightened entertainment. This year, among Reba McEntire and Post Malone, Usher led the list on the most critical task. While his performances are much loved, crediting his many accolades, his performance tonight, added on by a duet with Alicia Keys, wasn’t exactly a success. “I never thought we’d have a Super Bowl halftime show worse than Maroon 5, yet here we are,” a fan wrote on Twitter following the performance.

The post had people expressing concern with the setting and the show as a whole, if not necessarily Usher himself. “It was terrible,” one wrote. However, while negative views persisted, many spoke up in defiance of the claim. “I thought it was amazingly entertaining,” one wrote and more followed in agreement. Alicia Keys and Usher performed their duet on My boo following I Ain’t Got You on the keyboards. But it wasn’t all the 18-time BMA awardee had in store for the fans.

Usher through the half time

While Super Bowl half times haven’t been rid of controversies or disappointments, they haven’t pulled a stop on compelling performances either. Usher’s performance may have induced disappointment in fans, but the music icon ensured to provide a flowing routine. He started off with one of his most popular songs, Caught up, presenting his dancing skills. He was then joined on by Alicia Keys for a mellow tone contrasting the energy he carried early on.

Following a  duet, Usher went on with U Got it Bad to be later joined by his next guest, will.i.am. The two brought glam and glitter as they performed OMG but was later followed by the highlight of the night, including Ludacris and Lil Jon. The trio rocked to 2004 smash Yeah! to end the evening well.  Usher had admitted it to be “a challenge to squeeze 30 years in to 13 minutes,” and the star got through, but with a mixed reaction from the crowd.

One take at a time

I was a little kid when my dad brought home a second horse out of his sheer love for the creatures. The excitement to ride and care for one from the first moment still gets to me as I watch the horses in action today; covering the intensity on the field. However, along the way of being immersed in the wider ground of equestrian sports, rodeo and bull riding lingered in the sight.
