Prior to becoming the NFL GOAT as we know him today, Tom Brady was a double-sport threat. Yes, the 7X SB winner was just as talented at baseball as he was in football! His journey to the sport began in 1995, 5 years before he was drafted by the Patriots. Would he have been a legend at baseball too? Yes, his capabilities and talents showed a glimpse of what could have been.

With 20 years playing at the top for the NFL, winning about 15 Pro Bowls, and dominating each side, it’s hard to see the former QB in any other sport. But today, we look back at the NFL’s legendary baseball career, a time before Tom Brady achieved greatness in football.

Tom Brady’s early days as a baseball player

Tom Brady was born to be an athlete. He was just destined to be in the sports arena and make a huge name for himself. Back in Junipero Serra High School, the teenager was a three-sport athlete. He was remarkable at three sports- basketball, baseball, and of course football. And out of these, he decided to pursue two. His first love was football, but he was just as hard working when pursuing baseball, as he was with football.

It was as the NFL GOAT would recall years later, a difficult transition from a first base to a catcher. Come the senior year, Brady used his dominant left hand to work his way up to bat at the No.5 spot. The multiple MVP awards winner hit .311 with eight homers for two years straight. This was his ticket to the MLB.

The Montreal Expos unearthed the Junipero Serra High School catcher

The then Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr got his moment under the sun. He was selected as the 507th overall pick for the Montreal Expos. Brady at the time was a left-handed catcher and was picked in the 18th round.

Former Expos scout John Hughes says the club gave Brady the “neighborhood of bottom of the second (round), top of the third type money”. This was bait to lure the teenager to the baseball diamond. Hughes revealed years later for the money they offered. He said- “If we were going to offer him that type of money, we felt he was going to be a future big-leaguer,”

Scouts from 1995 hold the view that Brady could have succeeded in the MLB career. His personality, charm, and skills were all in sync to become the next MLB great. But as it is said, some things are meant to be, and Brady was meant for greatness on the football field.
