The problem of underpaid college coaches 

Deion Sanders wants coaches in college football programs to be paid fairly. In an interview with the NFL legend Shannon Sharpe on ‘Club Shay Shay’, Sanders revealed how little some college coaches, working under him, made.

“Salaries are totally different, man. I mean you can understand, I had coaches working round the clock. We work our butts off. We work on every day to the end with a Y there at Jackson. And you got some coaches making 50 and 55 grand, man,” Sanders said.

He then admitted that some coaches might like that salary and he doesn’t want to say anything negative about it. But he also revealed that he himself finds such an amount unsatisfactory.

“I don’t want to bad mouth that because some guys would love that. But as a college coach, that is unsatisfactory,” Coach Prime added.

Sanders started his college coaching journey with Jackson State back in 2020. After three successful years with the Tigers, he joined the Colorado Buffaloes earlier this month.

Deion Sanders started his journey as a football coach with his own Academy ‘Prime Prep’ in 2012, around seven years after he retired from the NFL as a Baltimore Ravens player. He later worked as the offensive coordinator for the Trinity Christian School football team. In 2020, Sanders dived into the world of college football when he accepted the head coaching position at Jackson State.

Sanders led Jackson State to back-to-back SWAC titles in 2021 and again in 2022. The Tigers last won their conference back in 2007. He built the JSU football program into one of the most formidable teams in SWAC and the 2022 season is a testament to that. The Tigers lifted the conference title with an overall record of 12-0. They lost the Celebration Bowl matchup against North Carolina Central but not before showcasing the results of Sanders’ coaching.

He will lead the University of Colorado football program next season. And the Buffaloes fans would hope that he can replicate his success with JSU in Colorado too.
