Aaron Rodgers Revealed He’s Been Playing With Broken Thumb for Seven Weeks; What Will It Take for Packers to Bench Him Now?

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers sent shockwaves through the Cheeseheads community on Wednesday, after the reigning MVP confirmed news dreaded by fans for quite a while. In an after-practice interview, Rodgers confirmed that he’s been nursing a broken thumb since their Week 6 game against the New York Giants in London. And despite repeatedly denying that the injury is causing his performance to drop, fans and analysts have started speculating if it’s time for Rodgers to be included in the Injured Reserve list.

Wednesday’s practice featured a staggering 16 players on the Packers’ injury report. Among those, making the list was QB Aaron Rodgers, who has been nursing a broken thumb since Week 6, according to him. But he made sure that he diverted every ounce of blame away from his injured thumb. But one could rightly ask, why not confirm what was so painfully obvious sooner?

NBC Sport’s Mike Florio has a very interesting take on Rodger’s actions. He predicted that Rodgers revealed the news because he gave in to the urge to let everyone know what he’s been dealing with. Or, he’s just puffing up the already-running excuse for his poor show against the Titans. Or worse still, he’s using this as a stepping stone to write off his story for the season, and possibly his career. According to Florio, Rodgers is too smart to do something accidentally. He will most likely have a plan behind his actions.

Injury-stricken Packers to face Eagles

In stark contrast to the Packers’ injury report, the Philadelphia Eagles only have one player on their injury list. Monday’s game against the Eagles could prove pivotal for the Packers’ hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. However, if they lose against the Eagles and drop to 4-8, then the bigger question at hand will be if they’d want to keep playing Rodgers. Risking a star QB for little more than a wooden spoon is not in the Packers’ best interests.

And then there’s the talk of Rodgers ending his career with the Packers. In all honesty, nothing seems to point towards Rodgers switching teams. And neither does he seem like someone willing to end his career after such a dreadful season. Knowing Rodgers, he’ll surely want to go out with a bang, and his own terms at that. So expect him to come back next year, with a fire in his belly.
