Week 9 matchup between the Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers was a mess in officiating. And referee Tony Corrente found himself in the debate’s epicenter. Chicago was penalized 12 times for 115 yards, along with plenty of questionable calls and no-calls that left the NFL wondering how one-sided the officiating was.

There were multiple instances in the game where the call seemed questionable, but the one that stood out was the taunting call on Bears outside linebacker Cassius Marsh. The former Steelers linebacker was flagged for what Corrente believed to be taunting the Steelers side, even though he wasn’t clearly taunting as shown in the replays.

“Keep in mind that taunting is a point of emphasis this year,” Corrente said to the reporter post-game. “With that said, I saw the player after he made a big play, run toward the bench area of the Pittsburgh Steelers and posture in such a way that I felt he was taunting them.”

But one thing was clearly noticeable that when Marsh was jogging back to the Bears sideline, he had brief contact with referee Tony Corrente, which prompted him to throw the flag. Although when asked about it, the referee replied, “That had nothing to do with it. It was the taunting aspect.”

Chicago Bears Cassius Marsh on being flagged

Marsh, during his post-game, stated that he was not taunting and that it was completely unfortunate for the referee to think of it that way. “I just think that was incredibly inappropriate,” Marsh said on being hip-checked.

“I think that one was just bad timing,” he added. “It’s pretty clear to everybody who saw it that I wasn’t taunting. I’ve been doing the celebration my whole career. It’s just sad to see stuff like that happen in a close game like that.”

Marsh said that he was ‘hip checked’ by the referee himself, which was clear in the clip as well. This incident was very unfortunate for the Bears as they faced their fourth loss in a row. Yet the game was very close and had there been proper officiating, the results could have been different.
