Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and former Browns starting quarterback Baker Mayfield might be on a collision course for playing in the NFL. While the former 49ers quarterback hasn’t played in the league since 2016, Mayfield finds himself on the way out after the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson. With teams filling up the remaining roster spots, including players in the QB position, few teams remain viable options for both of these talented quarterbacks.

While both players have never played against each other, they enter this offseason with the No.1 free agent QB tag up for grabs. While Kaepernick was away from the game for nearly 6 seasons, Mayfield has struggled to perform consistently in the league since he was drafted with the No.1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Kaepernick is a much more efficient player who takes care of the football and has experience of playing in a Super Bowl.

While Mayfield has had his ups and downs over multiple seasons, he did throw many interceptions and never made a huge splash in the postseason.

It is a debate between two athletes, who have shown their capacity to win and high ceiling of their abilities on the football field. While Mayfield has talent and numbers to back his performances, Kaepernick has got the potential to repeat what he did in seasons prior. Even former Browns head coach Hue Jackson showed interest in bringing back Kaepernick in 2017, but nothing ever materialized as he would have liked.

Who is better: Colin Kaepernick or Baker Mayfield?

The former Niners QB did enjoy success during his NFL career and built up confidence in his sophomore season by leading them to the Super Bowl on the back of his performances. Though the Niners lost to the Baltimore Ravens, he showed his quality by recording 302 passing yards and a TD pass while running for 62 rushing yards and a TD. He still enjoyed higher playoff success while recording career-high numbers of 3,369 passing yards, 19 TD passes with only 10 INTs during the 2014 NFL campaign.

Baker Mayfield, on the other hand, hasn’t got off to the best of starts while making the playoffs once in his 4 seasons in the league. But Mayfield has shown individual quality by putting up impressive numbers on the stat sheet recording 3,725 passing yards, 27 TDs, with 14 INTs during his rookie season.

However, his interceptions on throws increased and might have been concerning for the Browns franchise as they moved for Watson this offseason.

While both players have their pros and cons, Kaepernick has a better track record of wins on the football field. But with Mayfield, discipline can be developed to help him avoid making interceptions. NFL franchises are sure to be looking at both players to determine the best choice within the free agency.
