The New England Patriots are not the dominant force they used to be in the Tom Brady era. Over two decades, the franchise cemented itself as one of the greatest dynasties of the NFL. However, things haven’t been going so well over the past three years. And Patriots insiders have blasted head coach Bill Belichick for his poor decision-making.

According to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, one source explicitly said, “I love coach [Bill Belichick], but he f——ed us.” And these crude words, though not entirely egregious, sounded distasteful to some fans after the string of success over the last two decades. But some agreed that the offensive coaching staff could have been better.

Bill Belichick hired the wrong personnel

It all started when 7x Super Bowl champion Tom Brady left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Brady went on to win the Super Bowl with the Bucs and the Pats never regained their lost glory. And after former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left for the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders, things really crumbled down like a house of cards.

Belichick appointed former Patriots defensive coordinator and Lions HC Matt Patricia as the offensive play-caller. Bill also brought back Joe Judge to Foxborough as their quarterback coach. However, with both offensive coaches lacking any prior play-calling experience, fans saw this dismal end coming a long time.

We all knew it wasn’t going to end well when Patricia and Judge were on the same coaching staff,” one fan commented. Another wrote, “No. Joe Judge as the offensive coach did.”

Bill is a great coach. But his loyalty to underperforming assistants killed him. He loves his guys, but sometimes you gotta realize that they aren’t going to be successful in the role you put them in,” one comment said.

Fans still stood by their head coach

Under Patricia and Judge, the Patriots had one of the worst offenses in the league this year. They ranked 26th in combined offense, 17th in scoring, 24th in their running game, and 20th on the passing front. Moreover, QB Mac Jones also shared a hostile relationship with Judge, leading to the 8-9 season without the playoffs.

However, most were shocked that the legendary Bill Belichick had to hear all the criticism because of a few bad years.

He got you all 20 years of winning and 6 super bowls. Settle down over there, bro. A lot of teams wish they had a coach like that. Be grateful and thankful,” one fan perfectly summed up the entire situation. “He did what,” one fan enquired incredulously.

Belichick has already made some changes and hired back his former QB coach and OC Bill O’Brien to lead the offense. And with Tom Brady’s Buccaneers’ future in doubt, a return to Foxborough to reunite with Bill Belichick is not completely unthinkable. However, the Raiders and 49ers are ahead in the race for TB12.
