‘It Was a Tough Year’ – Chargers QB Justin Herbert Reflects On His First Season in the NFL

The LA Chargers are a franchise in transition. With rookie QB Justin Herbert brought in to replace veteran Phillip Rivers, the franchise finished with a 7-9 record.
Missing the playoffs, the franchise enters the 2021 season with a revamped coaching staff. Under new Head Coach Brandon Staley, the franchise will look to make sure a repeat of last season doesn’t happen again.
On a personal level, 2020 was not bad at all for Justin Herbert. The QB won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award by breaking the all-time record of most touchdowns by a QB in his debut season.

Now looking back at the past, the QB reflects on his journey so far and what he hopes to improve come next season.
Justin Herbert keen to improve his game
Despite having a sensational rookie campaign, Herbert described last season as tough. With his side not winning enough games to make the playoff, the QB is hopeful for better results next season.
“Obviously, it was a tough year. Didn’t win as many games as we would’ve liked. I think we got the talent, I think we got the guys, the staff members. So I’m really looking forward to it,” he said while talking to the NFL Network.

Speaking about what he can do to further help his team’s cause, the 23-year-old outlined the parts of his game he can improve.
“There’s a lot to improve on. I think if I could master the offense if I could go to the line of scrimmage and have a plan of exactly what we’re going to do,” he said.
“I think I can always work on footwork as well, stepping up in the pocket, getting the ball out quickly. There’s a lot of stuff to cover,” Herbert added.

While talking about the upcoming draft, the QB was vocal about his intentions to lobby for former Oregon Ducks teammate Penei Sewell.
“I’m doing my best. He’s an incredible player. Whenever you get a tackle like that in the draft, he can change your program,” he said.
