Multiple reports have confirmed that Sam Darnold will don the Red and Gold jersey in the upcoming season. The quarterback signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers and would serve as a backup. The QB1 position would have competition, as Trey Lance and Brock Purdy would battle it out for the starting position.

However, the NFL fandom and the Niners faithful have concerns over Darnold heading to the Bay.

Why did the Niners choose Sam Darnold over other QBs?

Sam Darnold might be a divisive choice for the Niners faithful. His statistics might be the ones speaking for it. He would preferably remain the third-string QB after Purdy and Lance. But there might be a reason why they are going after the former Jets and Panthers QB1.

As per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, the Niners monitored Sam Darnold when they plunged into the QB drought during the 2017 season. But in 2018, the franchise would settle with Jimmy Garoppolo, who is now a part of the Las Vegas Raiders.
