Kyle Shanahan Reveals the 49ers Will Look at Josh Rosen as Backup to Jimmy Garoppolo in 2021

The 2020 NFL season has definitely been one to forget for Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers. A host of injuries to first-choice starters have hampered their season. With first two starting quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens ruled out for the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan was in a dilemma. But the 49ers brought in former Miami Dolphins starter Josh Rosen to their squad ahead of last week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals picked the former UCLA football star in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft event. After leaving the Dolphins, Rosen was part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. But he signed for the 49ers earlier this month.
As per recent reports, Shanahan is reportedly considering Rosen to serve as a backup to Jimmy G next season.

Speaking ahead of their final regular-season fixture, coach Shanahan provided an update with respect to the short-term future of Josh Rosen in San Francisco.

He said, “If there’s something out there, we should probably try to do it. The first thing you want to do is just get someone who’s available right away because you can’t just take people off other people’s practice squads unless they agree to come, so you start to talk about our list of free agents who are out there on the street, as we say.”

“Everyone gets evaluated that way. But the way I’m looking at it is the way I just told you in terms of we needed to bring (in) a guy. For it to be a guy who was a first-round pick just [two years ago], that’s a bonus. So, I’m excited to have a guy in here with that ability that we are going to look at,” Shanahan said via Niners Nation.

The 49ers take on divisional rivals Seattle Seahawks this weekend. The latter were crowned NFC West champions after they defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Week 16. With both teams looking to rest some of their star names, Rosen might just get the nod to play against the Seahawks. Can he impress if given the opportunity? We’ll have to wait to find out.
