Ryan Russell came out to the world, but more importantly, to the game of Football, as Bisexual in 2019. At the time, Russell became the first active player in the league to come out as bisexual. Although the linebacker received national attention, and also heavy condemnation for his truth, Russell did not back down from anything. And now, he’s ready to tell everyone his story, from his own experiences as a queer man within the NFL.

Russell is taking readers on a personal journey through his memoir, ‘The Yards Between Us: A Memoir of Life, Love, and Football’, shedding light on his football career and his exploration of his identity. In it, he went through some of his experiences within football and NFL Locker Rooms. 

The role of toxic masculinity within NFL locker rooms

In his candid interview, Russell spoke about the toxic masculinity that permeates the male football culture. Within the confines of locker rooms, the pressure to conform to traditional masculine norms can create a hostile environment for those who deviate from the norm. Russell has been outspoken about the homophobia he has faced in his football career, especially since he came out.

Russell recalls both welcoming and less inclusive locker room experiences during his career. Football, as a whole, has often been intermingled with controversy regarding the male-centric toxic culture that has affected many players and fans. For Russell to finally speak out about it is a big step towards progress within the league. 

Increasing inclusivity in the NFL

Although Russell spoke about his experiences with toxic masculinity within the NFL, the former Bills linebacker spoke about the growing inclusivity in the NFL as well. 

“I think the NFL is definitely being more intentional about making that space feel more welcoming,” Russell spoke about the preconceived notions of players and coaches from different generations, which have played a major factor in the perception of LGBTQ+ awareness within the NFL today. 

As the first openly queer NFL athlete, Russell’s role in increasing awareness amongst players and teams has been crucial. Through his new memoir, the Purdue Grad looks to share his explorations of gender as an athlete, while also revealing the depths and reality of life within an NFL locker room.
