4x NBA Champion LeBron James is a huge football fan. From playing the sport in high school to watching it during his NBA career, James has been captivated by the gridiron. Since Deion Sanders took over as the Head Coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, the Lakers star has been one of many athletes who have showered praise on ‘Coach Prime’ for his significant role in a resurgent Buffs side.

LeBron James was even supporting Sanders’ Buffs in their Cross State Clash against the Colorado State Rams. When Cornerback Travis Hunter was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge that resulted in him being hospitalized, the NBA star reacted passionately.

The Colorado Buffaloes and Colorado State Rams played in a game with unmatched tension. But in the midst of the heightened feelings, everyone shouted in shock as Henry Blackburn charged Travis Hunter. Blackburn’s tackle surprised fans in the stadium, and the brutal impact surprised Hunter as he was running at full speed. This resulted in a serious injury that required emergency medical attention.

LeBron didn’t hold back and took to X–formerly Twitter to react to the incident. In the post that now has over 11m views, he said, “Like I don’t understand the difference between targeting and what I just witnessed. I’ve seen others get thrown out for far less. That was blatant and uncalled for IMO!” This openly shows his anger about the Henry Blackburn tackle.

LeBron James’ remark has sparked a much-needed discussion about player safety and the impartiality of officials in college football. He expressed his disapproval of the fair application of targeting regulations. Many fans and commentators agreed with the Lakers star that Hunter’s tackle was “blatant” and “uncalled for.”

What Hunter’s injury signals for the Buffs

Travis Hunter is the Buffaloes’ top offensive and defensive weapon, so his injury was a huge blow for the team. Nevertheless, they persevered and came out of the game with a 43-35 win. After the game, head coach Deion Sanders said, “I know Travis like a book. He probably is gonna want to be out for two weeks. But we got to make sure … his health is more important than this game.

Hunter will be out of the field for at least three weeks due to a lacerated liver, caused by his cracked ribs. This has caused significant stress on the team for their next game against Oregon.
