After Tom Brady’s departure from Massachusetts, New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick was under pressure to replicate the success from the years before heading into the 2020 season. The 6-time Super Bowl-winning coach brought in 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton before the season could begin.

The former Carolina Panthers man signed a short 1-year deal with the Patriots. However, COVID-19 and other external factors meant that the New England Patriots were in for a rough year in the league. Newton threw for 2,600+ yards with 8 passing TDs against 10 interceptions.

Coach Belichick’s side could only manage a 3rd-place finish in the AFC East. They missed out on a spot in the Playoffs ending their campaign with a dismal 7-9 record. Meanwhile, Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl LV title earlier this month.

Cam Newton comes to the defense of Patriots coach Bill Belichick

Coach Belichick was subjected to major criticism post the conclusion of the 2020 season. In the past, several analysts claimed that Brady’s success with the Patriots was down to Belichick’s tactical nous. But 2020 proved otherwise.

However, one person who disagrees with any Bill Belichick slander is quarterback Cam Newton. While appearing on the latest episode of the I Am Athlete podcast, Newton jumped to the defense of the 68-year-old New England boss.

“I think Bill Belichick is the most misunderstood person and not 100% 1,000%, he dopest. Like he is a cool dude. He understands the game. He’s like a historian of the game.

“And for you to just sit down and chat with him. Like, it’s like, Damn, like he’s going back and he’s like literally teaching the game…he’s a genius,” Newton said on the show.

Despite his admiration for Belichick, there is no guarantee that Newton will return to Foxborough in 2021. The former Auburn star will turn 32 later this year in May.

Time is running out for him to establish himself as a relevant force in the league. Cam maintains that he is still not ready to contemplate retirement, adding that ‘There can’t be 32 quarterbacks better than me in the league’.
