While many cite the success of the New England Patriots down to Tom Brady and the side’s dynamic offense, the team’s defense often doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick is known to be a defensive mastermind. And under his tutelage, the Patriots have produced multiple superstars on the defensive end.
Among them is cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Drafted by the Buffalo Bills back in 2012, Gilmore’s career took off after joining the Patriots.

Ever since making the switch back in 2017, the two-time first-team All-Pro has been a cornerstone for the Pats defense. Gilmore’s personal highlight though is winning the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
And though two years have passed since the cornerback hasn’t lost the spring in his step. While the New England Patriots had a season to forget in 2020, for the cornerback it was business as usual.
Despite missing out on five games, his performances got him a Pro Bowl selection. But as important as he remains to the franchise, his contract is running out.
Gilmore is under contract with the New England Patriots till 2021. With no contract extension talks in place yet, the cornerback recently opened up about his plans for the future.
New England Patriots continue to be what Gilmore wants
Heading into the new season, Gilmore will be 31. With a year left on his contract though, Gilmore hasn’t gone into panic mode.
“That stuff will play out as it will,” he said while talking to the Boston Globe. “I just try to take it day by day, and that’s all I can do,” he added.

But the fact of the matter remains that the cornerback has little control over how things will ultimately pan out.
“It’s out of my control,” he said. “You’ve got to leave it in their hands… Of course, I know what type of player I am, what type of person I am. I let everything lay on its own.”
