A two times Super Bowl winner has decided to hang his cleats after just five seasons. The decision is indeed a shocker for everyone, including his teammates and coach. Rams’ Head Coach Sean McVay revealed to the press that Rams RB is retiring prematurely.

The average career of an NFL player is a mere 3.3 years, while the average retirement age is 27 years. But NFL players probably won’t retire so early if they have two Super Bowl rings in just five seasons. Even NFL legend Aaron Rodgers has just one Super Bowl in over eighteen seasons. What could be his reason for a premature retirement?

Winning a Super Bowl is a dream for many. Winning two Super Bowls is great. But two Super Bowl wins in just five years is even better. As per the video uploaded on Rams’ YouTube channel, Michel informed McVay about the decision on Saturday morning’s meeting. “I had a conversation with Sony Michel this morning. What an incredible player, what a great career this guy has had. Umm, he’s gonna retire.”

Sean confirmed that the reason for Michel’s abrupt retirement was his health. “We got a chance to meet [Saturday] morning, and he was just kind of letting me know how his body was feeling and just some of his thoughts,“. Michel had just joined the Rams camp for another season after 2021, but could not continue.

Michel’s pivotal touchdowns gave him two Super Bowl rings

Sony Michel was a part of the Rams winning Super Bowl LVI team. He was impressive with his rushing skills and versatility. Michel was transferred to the Rams just before the 2021 season and he made crucial contributions to the team’s offense, especially during the playoffs. His best moment was the 67-yard touchdown run that secured the Rams’ second Lombardi Trophy. It solidified his reputation as a reliable and vital running back on the championship-winning team.

New England Patriots picked him in the first round of the draft (overall no. 31) during the 2018 draft. Michel led the team in regular-season rushing yards with 931 yards. He also proved to be invaluable during the playoffs, scoring six rushing touchdowns in three postseason games. His best moment was a pivotal touchdown in Super Bowl LIII, which contributed to the Patriots’ sixth Super Bowl victory.
