The Baltimore Ravens might need to be prepared for a potential quarterback replacement. With the ongoing Lamar Jackson standoff, the Ravens seem more than likely to lose their marquee quarterback. Recent reports illuminated the fact that the Ravens’ front office was already contemplating seeking a backup for Jackson.

The Baltimore Ravens had earlier offered a deal to quarterback Baker Mayfield. Although the logistics of the offer are not known, Mayfield chose to pass on the opportunity. Since then, Mayfield has enlisted with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, emerging as Tom Brady’s replacement.

Baker Mayfield rejects the Ravens

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have reached an agreement for a one-year deal. The Former No. 1 pick has been offered up to $8.5 million in remuneration by the Buccs, as he is expected to take on the mantle from the NFL GOAT Tom Brady.

However, recent reports claim that the Ravens were also interested in roping in Mayfield.

Prior to signing with the Buccs, Mayfield was looking for a starter role, but the presence of Lamar Jackson with the Ravens would have certainly relegated him to be the backup QB, hence he passed up on the offer.

Amidst the ongoing Lamar Jackson fiasco, the Ravens probably wanted to get Mayfield as one of the pivotal pieces to their Plan B. The Ravens already have two elite quarterbacks waiting for their opportunity, backup Tyler Huntley and undrafted rookie Anthony Brown.

Being a restricted free agent, Huntley is yet to see interest from other teams, and maybe the Ravens are counting on his return to the team. Adding Mayfield to the mix would have given the Baltimore Ravens a surplus of options in the quarterback position. With Lamar Jackson still being their top priority, looks like the Ravens had already started preparing for the worst possible outcome, but Mayfield had other plans for his future.

Jackson still not budging

It has been weeks since the Baltimore Ravens placed their non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson. Jackson shook the Ravens after demanding a contract in line with Deshaun Watson’s deal. Watson secured himself a five-year fully guaranteed $230 million deal with the Cleveland Browns. While many around the league felt that Watson’s deal destroyed the equilibrium of the QB market, several others went on to blame other big-time QBs in the league.

Both Lamar Jackson and the Ravens have maintained publicly that they preferred a long-term partnership despite a failure to actually finalize a new contract. As the standoff enters its final stages, both parties have refused to bow down, making the drama much more alluring for the entire league.
