Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, a two-time Pro Bowler, recently praised a legendary Detroit Lions player who is in the Hall of Fame. This praise comes shortly after Slay’s impressive performance in a game where he limited Mike Evans to just 60 receiving yards.

Darius Slay also discussed the highs and lows of his NFL journey. From being drafted by the Detroit Lions and playing alongside the all-time great wide receiver Calvin Johnson to getting traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. When talking about learning from Johnson, Slay mentioned practicing against him. He talked about being amazed by his strength, athleticism, speed, and quickness.

Darius Slay calls Calvin Johnson ‘greatest receiver of all time’

Five-time Pro Bowler Slay referred to former wide receiver Calvin Johnson as the greatest receiver of all time. He described how Johnson was nearly unstoppable during their practice sessions in Detroit.

According to JPAFootball, Slay said on a new episode of ‘2nd Wind,’ “Strong, athletic, fast, quick, gets out of breaks. He’s as quick as a little dude… running a 4’3 at 6’4 and 240 lbs. I’d press him and he’d run right through my arms. It don’t faze him.” Slay admitted that he initially struggled to defend against 6× Pro Bowler Calvin Johnson. But he appreciated how Johnson coached him on what he did wrong.

Considering Calvin Johnson the greatest receiver ever due to his dominance during a short span of time, Slay said: “I’ll say he’s the greatest receiver ever… He’s very like god-gifted.” Show hosts Jarvis Miller and James Wah also mentioned how teams would double-cover Johnson with two defenders because of his impact on the game. “He’s special,” they said, adding they don’t believe anyone has reached the level of impact that Calvin Johnson had.

After the Super Bowl heartbreak

On the podcast, Darius also discussed his new $42 million contract with the Eagles. He acknowledged, “Some got some good offers, some good money. But I do love Philly; does me the right way,” Slay decided to stay with Philadelphia because they treat him well. He talked about the culture inside the Eagles’ locker room and how the team plans to rebound from their 2023 Super Bowl loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Slay emphasized that NFL players put their bodies on the line every Sunday and deserve fair compensation.He acknowledged that football careers have a limited window and wants to make the most of it financially.
