The uncertainty over where Roger Federer will play next continues to loom over tennis. Given that Federer is in search of decent match practice, the Swiss seems to still be assessing his options as the Tour embarks upon the clay swing. Federer recently returned to the tour after being out for 14 months and is likely to play just one clay tournament in the run up to the French Open 2021.
Mutua Madrid Open, Italian Open, ATP Geneva are some of the options for Federer, but reports suggest Mutua Madrid is off the table.
Federer doesn’t plan on skipping the French Open 2021, but certainly wants clay court practice under his belt. That tournament exclusive tournament was thought to be the Mutua Madrid Open 2021, but given the postponement of the French Open, this opens up options for Federer elsewhere.

Why could Roger Federer skip Mutua Madrid Open 2021?
French Open 2021 has now been postponed to start a week later on May 30th. This frees up a week and gives Federer a chance to take part in the ATP Geneva Open 2021, which begins on the 17th of May and ends on the 22nd of May.
Geneva Open is an ATP 250 series tournament on clay which will have a limited and easy draw for Federer to get his desired match practice. Furthermore, it is his home tournament, which could play a part in his decision. So it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Federer skips playing the Madrid Open.
