Messi took to his Instagram to announce just minutes ago that Athletic Club Momento will be hosting an auction at Sotheby’s in New York later this year, with six of La Pulga’s World Cup-winning jerseys serving as the key attraction. The player also stated that he’d be donating a proceeding of the amount from the auction to charity.

NBA legend Michael Jordan will undoubtedly go down in history as the greatest basketball player of all time. The Chicago Bulls icon had a decorated NBA career winning 6 titles to his name. Jordan’s Bulls jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 sold for a record $10 million last year in September becoming the most expensive sports memorabilia.

However, it seems like Lionel Messi is set to overtake the record this year. The player has partnered with Athletic Club Momento, who will be hosting an auction at Sotheby’s in New York later this year.

Albiceleste icon Lionel Messi took to his Instagram handle earlier today as he made a massive announcement to his fans. The star has stated that he will auction six of his World Cup-winning jerseys later this year. The Inter Miami star also stated that a portion of the funds from the auction will be donated to charity.

Messi in his post wrote, “Six World Cup shirts. One auction. Today, my friends at @acmomento are announcing an auction at @sothebys for the six shirts I wore during the World Cup in Qatar, including my shirt from the Final. Place your bids online at Sotheby’s from 30 November – 14 December. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases.”

With the bids starting at $9.9 million, Lionel Messi looks set to make history and overtake MJ to register the highest-selling sports memorabilia. Fans around the world will hope to get their hands on one of the six jerseys. After all who doesn’t want a piece of history in their possession?
