The Germans dominated the game throughout but weren’t able to take their chances. They briefly went behind in the game to Manuel Neuer’s own goal. Germany scored three goals after that, but that wasn’t enough for them to qualify.
Their fate was not in their own hands on the final matchday. They heavily relied on the result in other Group E matches between Japan and Spain. The win for Spain would have taken them to the knockouts. Spain, despite losing to table topper Japan, went through on the goal difference. Germany needed a huge win to overturn the goal difference, but they failed.
Speculation on Hansi Flick’s future
The elimination from the group stage has brought Hansi Flick under scrutiny. The decision not to take any full-time right-back was also a surprise to many. Additionally, playing Musiala on the left wing also made the headlines.
To the question about his future as a German national team coach, Flick replied, “We’ll work that out quickly, it’s difficult to answer now right after the game when we’re eliminated. We’ll see about that soon”.
