Every soccer fan dreams of meeting their favorite players. Even in a stroke of luck, when a fan randomly encounters their preferred star in public, there is hope for a mutual greeting. But the recent acts of Manchester City luminary Erling Haaland have created controversy, as he not only refused a public plea from the families of the club’s impending rivals, Fluminense, but also went as far as to ‘pretend they didn’t exist.’

The shocking incident transpired at Jeddah’s shopping mall, where the wives and kids of Fluminense players encountered Haaland. Sadly, the player ignored everyone. But why did the striker do this? Does it have to do with his frustration over missing the Club World Cup final?

Samuel Xavier’s wife, Karina Xavier, recently took to Instagram to share a peculiar incident surrounding Erling Haaland. The wife of Fluminense’s right-back posted a picture of the Norwegian in the mall and wrote, “I still haven’t gotten over Haland not saying hi to the kids who are super fans of him; he didn’t even look at them.” Additionally, Ganso Costi’s wife, Giovanna Costi, was also present at the time and provided additional commentary to describe the incident in a social media writeup. The wife of Fluminense’s midfielder said, “It was horrible,” while insisting her son couldn’t even get closer to Haaland, who ignored the 6 young fans.

“He didn’t even say goodbye from afar. Pretended they didn’t exist…wow so much! The children were very sad! What are the chances of finding an idol (before that happens, right) like that? In the street,” she penned. Despite being in an ’empty space’, Erling Haaland continued his way and didn’t bother to stop. “I wouldn’t wash for more than 5 seconds! Anyway. Even in pain, you learn, right? These children will definitely get something good out of today!” she concluded. Indeed, it is quite surprising to see this side of Haaland. Let’s hope the consequences of his actions do not affect his teammates in his absence. Wait, but why is he absent?

Why has Haaland been forced to miss the Club World Cup final?

Manchester City is in the finals of the Club World Cup after clinching a 3-0 win over the Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds. As the Cityzens prepare to take on the Brazilian team Fluminense, they find themselves without the services of not just Erling Haaland, but also Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku.

Pep Guardiola is prohibited from including these three stars in the final due to FIFA regulations stating that if a player is not included in the matchday squad for the semi-final, they are ineligible for the subsequent game. Although the likelihood of the three being fielded was low, Guardiola will not even get to use them as substitutes for the final.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
