Qatari interest is finally off from Manchester United as they rejected another bid from Sheikh Jassim. The takeover saga has been going on for around 13 years since Sheikh Jassim first showed interest in a takeover as he discussed plans in 2010 with United’s management. Qatar had many plans for United and wanted a total makeover but even after increased bids, Glazers never showed true intent to sell. Among the many plans was to bring Kylian Mbappe to Old Trafford.

Sheikh Jassim and his entourage will be disappointed as Glazers’ demands were way off United’s total valuation. It’s immensely sad for the United fans who have been protesting for years with their slogan “Glazers Out“. This though now clears way for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make another bid.

It’s no secret that Glazers’ management of United has been dreadful. The team has not been able to get back to the winnings ways that they last enjoyed under the managerial ship of Sir Alex Ferguson. With the Qatar deal off, supporters of the club see no immediate relief. As per sources, there were also plans to bring PSG’s striker to the club.

Sheikh Jassim had plans to bring 3x French Cup winner, Kylian Mbappe, to Old Trafford had his takeover bid been successful. Sheikh Jassim had many transformative plans for the club from investing in the squad to revamping the infrastructure and training ground facilities.

Qatar’s last bid for United takeover was around $8 billion. Yet, the American owners never really had an intent to give a 100 per cent stake in the club to Sheikh Jassim. Geo-politics also had a role to play in the unsuccessful takeover by Qatar. In the end, it’s the United supporters who will be left the most upset as they were convinced that a takeover is on the cards.

The takeover saga has been ongoing for a long time. From the involvement of PSG’s Nasser El Khelaifi to rival bids from Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the saga has been long-stretched. The timeline of the saga also shows how Glazers were never really on board to give 100 per cent to any investor.

A timeline of takeover bids for Manchester United

In November 2022, the Glazers put Manchester United up for sale, sparking intense demand for change among fervent United supporters. This move attracted the interest of prominent figures, including English billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his company INEOS, as well as the Qataris led by Sheikh Jassim. The Qataris were on the verge of finalizing a colossal $7.65 billion deal. The announcement was eagerly anticipated by the United fans but destiny had other plans.

With a valuation surpassing $6 billion, the prospective sale of Manchester United could’ve dwarfed Chelsea’s $3.1 billion acquisition, making the club worth over ten times its previous year’s annual revenue. In Early 2023 intense bidding wars involving Sheikh Jassim, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and an unnamed bidder took place. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi played a pivotal role in these negotiations.

Concerns later arose among Premier League club owners regarding the potential Qatari takeover of a top-flight English club. Recent developments include Sheikh Jassim’s withdrawal from the United takeover, leaving Sir Jim Ratcliffe to set his sights on a 25 per cent stake in the club.
