Yesterday marked a somber day for the soccer community as it was met with the tragic loss of Cesar Luis Menotti. The legendary coach who led Argentina to the 1978 World Cup bid farewell to the world at the age of 85. As fans around the globe pay respects to the former player, Lionel Messi also joined to pay tribute to his country’s ‘great references.’

La Pulga took to Instagram and shared a recent picture on his Instagram story. In the click, he can be seen having a conversation with Menotti alongside one of the La Albiceleste’s chiefs. As translated by DeepL, he also wrote a caption saying, “He left us one of the great references of our soccer. Condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Born in Rosario on 5 November 1938, Menotti kickstarted his playing career in the early 50’s. The former striker has played for several of his country’s clubs including Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, and Racing Club. He even played in the National Professional Soccer League of the United States, representing NY Generals. In the late 60’s, he also enjoyed stints in Brazil with Santos and Clube Atlético Juventus.

After beginning his coaching career at Huracán to win the Argentinian championship in 1973, Menotti took charge of the national team, before leading the U-20 side to World Cup. He then led Barcelona to La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup between 1982-84. He also spent time coaching for Mexico’s national team and domestic sides including Peñarol, Boca Juniors, Sampdoria, Atletico Madrid, River Plate, Independiente, Rosario Central, and UAG Tecos.

Having coached a young Diego Maradona, Menotti certainly had quite an illustrious career. Meanwhile, Messi wasn’t alone in paying tribute to the iconic goalscorer.

Former Argentina and FC Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano also paid his respects to his country’s legendary figure. He also took to Instagram and shared a post of La Albiceleste’s news on the story. Additionally, the Argentina Football Association also wrote a heartwarming message for the icon: “The Argentine Football Association regrets to announce with great sadness the death of César Luis Menotti. Farewell, Flaco querido.”

Following the conclusion of his managerial tenure, Menotti resumed his involvement with the Argentine national team in 2019, this time in a directorial capacity. His return coincided with notable triumphs, including victories in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup, where he played a significant role in guiding the team to success. Even though he bid adieu to the world, the name César Luis Menotti will forever remain in the memory of millions.
