Soccer fans will never be tired of comparing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. In every state and every award, it is almost always a debate between these two megastars. Even after dominating soccer for more than one and a half decades, these stars are undoubtedly still the mount Rushmore of the game.

Every time someone has to choose their favorite soccer player, more often than not it’s a decision between these two. After going face to face for years, the stars are now off to very different trajectories in their careers. After Lionel Messi won the Qatar World Cup, fans are drifting away from the debate as they pay respect to the domination of Lionel Messi. However, some are noticing the decline in the popularity of Ronaldo. He faces one of the darkest slumps of his decorated career, though, from the last couple of matches, he is back to grilling defenders on the soccer pitch. Even Mbappe is deflecting over to Lionel Messi.

FIFA organizes the awards ceremony to recognize the best and brightest performers in international soccer. While many awards were presented, the most hype undoubtedly went to the best men’s player. The World Cup champ Lionel Messi got an overwhelming amount of votes. However, the votes of Portugal coach, Roberto Martinez got fans excited. Here is how fans reacted to his votes.

Martinez choosing Lionel Messi is understandable until the fact that he is the coach of Portugal. The country and the national team of Cristiano Ronaldo. Granted that Ronaldo’s last year was arguably his worst but, this isn’t the first time Martinez has taken Ronaldo off a list.

During Qatar World Cup, Portugal had an average run. They barely squeezed out a win against Ghana and lost their last match against South Korea. Ronaldo scored one goal that came off a penalty. Ronaldo would be benched for the round of 16 matches and after Ramos walked all over Switzerland, they stomped their way to have a 6-1 win.

Martinez would bench Ronaldo in the quarterfinal as well. However, this time, Morocco was destined to continue their historic underdog run. Portugal lost 1-0 and Ronaldo was sobbing leaving the pitch. He might not be crying for the votes of his coach, but many fans got another reason to troll him.
