Megan Rapinoe, a prominent member of the USWNT, has criticized Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish FA, for his behavior following the Women’s World Cup final. The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup concluded on Sunday with an exhilarating competition. Spain emerged victorious over England in the final match, resulting in them lifting the esteemed trophy.

The celebration of Spain’s victory in the final, however, has been overshadowed by the controversial actions of Luis Rubiales. The president of the Spanish FA, in a moment of supposed jubilation, kissed Spanish star Jenni Hermosa. He further shocked onlookers by grabbing his crotch while celebrating the victory. These actions have sparked outrage and calls for his resignation. One voice that has joined in the criticism is that of Megan Rapinoe.

For Rapinoe and USWNT the World Cup wasn’t as great as for Spain as they failed to make it past the Round of 16. It also marked the final appearance of Rapinoe for USWNT, who earlier announced her retirement. Rapinoe still had a lot to say about Rubiales’ behavior. In a recent interview with Franklin Foer of the Athletic, the forward expressed her thoughts on the incident.

Rapinoe stated, “It made me think about how much we are required to endure”. She also brought forward the incident from last year of the Spanish team protesting about the poor treatment from their coaches. “Maybe that was something that galvanized them, but you shouldn’t have to have that,” she further added.

The 38-year-old further reflected on another image from the final whistle, where Rubiales is seen grabbing his crotch. According to Rapinoe, this picture “signals such a deep level of misogyny and sexism in that federation and in that man (Luis Rubiales)”. Megan Rapinoe is just one of many who have criticized the Spanish FA president for his actions.

In response, he has issued an apology, acknowledging his mistake. Rubiales openly admitted, “I was completely wrong, I have to admit it”. Jenni Hermosa was not the only Spanish star to captivate Rapinoe’s attention, as another player left a profound impact on her.
