Australia and Saudi Arabia were competing for the hosting rights of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. In the end, Australia decided to back out of the race due to several reasons. This meant that the Middle Eastern country secured the hosting rights. This led to criticism from human rights groups as they intensified their claims of sportswashing. However, amid the issues, Saudi Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz has claimed that the country is capable of hosting. He said, “We’ve showcased that—we’ve hosted more than 85 global events, and we’ve delivered on the highest level. We want to attract the world through sports.
