Lionel Messi is preparing for his next MLS campaign. His performances last season helped Inter Miami win their first major title, the Leagues Cup. While the club failed to make the league playoffs, a fully adapted Messi could inspire them to significant achievements. The fans in the US are getting ‘wowed’ by Messi, but things could have been different. After his PSG spell, there were rumors of Messi joining the Saudi Pro League. In fact, one team made a huge bid to sign Messi. A bid that would have seen Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo become rivals yet again.

SPL has proved to attract the best soccer players in the world. Superstars like Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Benzema are just a few to have made the move to the Middle East. Bids made to Messi and Kylian Mbappe proved the league can compete financially with just about any club. However, Messi took his talents to South Beach!

Notably, Messi did not reach the heights of Barca at PSG. Hence, there was not much expectation regarding a contract renewal. During the last months of his PSG stint, Messi received an astronomical offer from Neymar’s Al Hilal. As per Spanish Journalist Guillem Balague, “During Messi’s future saga in summer, Al-Hilal’s delegation was in Paris with their jet ready with 1 BILLION per year offer but Messi never considered their offer seriously.” The contract would have seen Messi become the world’s highest-paid athlete. However, Messi decided against the move, thus putting an end to his celebrated rivalry with Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo had an intense rivalry from 2009 until 2018. The two superstars last met on January 19 in the PSG vs Saudi All-Star XI match. In what seemed like their final outing against each other, both managed to score goals.

During Messi’s 2nd season with PSG, there were also rumors that he would perhaps go back to Barcelona. However, as per Marca, Argentina’s triumph in the World Cup changed his decision. It was the only remaining hurdle for Messi, and he achieved it. As a result, playing in Europe was not a motivating factor. While Messi might not be joining FC Barcelona again, a former Barca man seems to be heading to Inter Miami.
