The England national team has had some of the best coaches. While the current group is being led by Gareth Southgate, word is around the town that he may get relieved from his duties after the 2024 Euro. In fact, a tactical genius’ name has been added, as former England star Gary Lineker wants Pep Guardiola to take charge, who will be an ‘amazing appointment’ to carry the Three Lions to World Cup glory.

The rumors continue to spread that the Manchester City manager is being considered one of the favorites to become the next England boss. Let’s see how Lineker feels about the same.

In a recent episode of ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, Gary Lineker put up a question to Micah Richards about Gareth Southgate’s potential replacement. Interestingly, the Manchester City veteran backed his former team’s current coach, Pep Guardiola, for the job. He claimed it doesn’t matter if the Three Lions’ coach is English or not, as long as they win trophies.

While heaping praise on the current England boss, Richards also underlined Southgate’s achievement to lead England to the 2021 Euro finals and World Cup quarter-finals. “I just think in terms of elite coaches if you could say who would you want, I think Pep could just tweak us that little bit to get us over the line,” he added.

Additionally, Gary Lineker also branded Guardiola as a genius. “They’ll certainly be one of the favorites with the players that they’ve got. If he wins the trophy, then he might want to pop at the World Cup.”

Be that as it may, it is quite an eyebrow-raising claim from both soccer veterans. But can we see this happening?

Can Guardiola become the England boss?

Pep Guardiola’s current Manchester City contract keeps him at the club till 2025. Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate’s reign will end after the 2024 Euro. Several sources claim that the FA sees the former Barcelona man as the perfect replacement for the current England boss, as they might not offer Southgate a new contract. However, it is important to note that the Spaniard is not only being considered for England but for many more nations too especially Spain.

However, that may change if England manages to impress in the upcoming Euros. Leaving an indelible mark won’t be enough, as they might need to win it; otherwise, things might come to an end for Southgate. Nevertheless, let us know your thoughts on this.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
