Erling Haaland scored 36 goals last season to shatter the Premier League’s goal-scoring record. Since then, Haaland has widely been pipped as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is currently soccer’s all-time top goal scorer. But the Norwegian has to consistently score around 42 goals for the upcoming 16 seasons in his career. Soccer veteran Rio Ferdinand thinks the Manchester City star will fall short of doing so. Nonetheless, former Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard begs to differ. He thinks Haaland can easily tally more than 42 goals every season.

In his recent appearance on an episode of John Obi-Mikel’s ‘The Obi One podcast,‘ Hazard spoke about talented young stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Erling Haaland. Speaking of the Norwegian, Hazard said, “Haaland is the guy who’s gonna score 50 goals every season. You know, playing good or playing bad, he’s gonna score goals.” The former Belgian midfielder added that he had noticed Haaland during his Borussia Dortmund days. As the story goes, Haaland’s consistent scoring riots rendered both Hazard and his brother in sheer disbelief.

Erling Haaland scored 52 goals in his inaugural Premier League season with Manchester City. Besides, during his peak in the Premier League, CR7 managed to net 31 goals, which was an erstwhile league record. Haaland, however, rewrote it by scoring 36 goals to Ronaldo’s 31 and Mohamed Salah’s 32. Meanwhile, Ronaldo at 39, has not given up on his goal-scoring riots just yet. CR7’s impressive last season with Al Nassr and Portugal NT proves he is still the game’s biggest goal machine.

When ‘young animals’ like Erling Haaland played second fiddle to Ronaldo

In 2023, Cristiano Ronaldo scored an impressive 54 goals to win the Golden Boot, beating Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, who both scored 52 goals. Meanwhile, Erling Haaland had fallen short against all three of them, with 50 goals to his tally. Speaking of his achievement, Ronaldo said he was ‘proud to beat young animals like Haaland’ when he received the top scorer’s prize at the Globe Soccer Awards.

The Norwegian lost the race because he contracted an injury in early December, last year, which kept him out for seven matches in the month. It would have perhaps been a different story if the 23-year-old did not pick up the injury. Do you agree with Hazard’s claim on Haaland’s goal-scoring feat?
